The Right Way to Start a Car

When you're getting ready to jump start your car's battery, you should find a set of jumper cables and another vehicle that you can use to get a jolt. Once you have this equipment, simply follow these steps to get back on the roads near Tulsa or Oklahoma City:

  • Take the car with a good battery and park it near the dead vehicle, so that their hoods are almost touching. Set both parking brakes and make sure both vehicles are turned off before moving on.
  • Open both hoods and locate each battery. In some cases, the battery may be covered by a plastic cover.
  • Identify the positive (red) and negative (black) terminals on both batteries. If they are clean and free of corrosion, you are ready to proceed.
  • Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal of the discharged battery
  • Unwind the battery cable and connect the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the powered vehicle.
  • While facing the correct battery, connect the black end of the cable to the negative terminal.
  • Returning to the vehicle with the battery discharged, connect the last black cable clamp to a flat, unpainted metal surface on the car's chassis.
  • With all connections in place, start the work vehicle's engine and let it run for a few moments. This will transmit a charge to the battery once it dies.

Try starting the car with the battery dead. If your car won't start, you may need to call a jump starting service like AAA.

If the car starts right away, carefully remove the cables by reversing the order in which you connected them. Don't let the ends touch until all the parts have been removed.

The car that has just been started should be run for ten minutes or more so that the battery can recharge. The other car can be stopped immediately.

If your jump start doesn't go as planned, you may be understandably frustrated. Take advantage of these tips to narrow down the range of possible problems and find out how to get your life back:

  • You may be trying to start the car, but all you hear is a click. In these cases, your battery is probably fine, but your starter may be defective.
  • If you can turn on your car's electrical systems, but your engine still won't start, you may have a problem with your ignition switch, starter or fuses. A dead battery could also be the cause.
  • If you are able to start the car, but the battery discharges again shortly after you drive off. You may be dealing with a weak alternator.
